That point about setting nigh-impossible goals serving as a motivator matches exactly with my own experience. All the things I've done - joining the army, getting a physics degree, learning Japanese (especially that last one) - I've done almost out of spite. In pretty well every case I had one or more people tell me I was biting off more than I could chew, and that only made me want to prove them wrong. I'm not sure it's universal though; not everyone has that sort of 'fuck you' attitude. A lot of people I know have more of a 'fuck it' attitude. Though maybe that's just more ebb and flow....</description>
