Music Is My Boyfriend (Music Is My Girlfriend)

Books and Such, Emily's Posts — emily February 14, 2008 @ 8:38 am

Today we are going to share some of our favorite music with you. Discovering a great new song is one of my favorite things in life and we hope to bring that experience to you. This will be an ongoing series of posts covering each of our favorite genres. First up and most exciting is world music:

Shantel is one of my new favorites. Makes me want to bust out my village dance moves.

Cumbia Sobre El Rio is one of our favorite songs. Turn it up and shut your eyes, take a trip to TJ.

Erisioni is a Georgian dance company. This is their most famous song, Shatilis Asulo.

No Hay Manera was my favorite song for awhile when I lived in Orange County. It was an interesting period of my life…

Arash is one of the biggest pop stars in the world that you’ve never heard of. We have him to thank for our limited (but adorable) Farsi skills.

Orishas is a Cuban hip-hop group which I enjoy.

Ucnobis gaumarjos! One of Georgia more prolific pop stars, Ucnobi makes us want to dance.

Youth of Eglington by Black Uhuru is my favorite reggae song ever.

Os Mutantes, if I understand correctly were like the Brazilian Beatles.

t.A.T.u. is (are?) fantasic. Get authentic, listen in Russian.

CSS is responsible for the title of this post and was featured in an iPhone commercial. They’re from Brazil.

If you haven’t tried Pandora yet, get going. It is so much fun. You just put one of your favorite songs and it plays songs that are similar.

Songza is a great way to play one song you really like. I also used it to link the songs you see above. Fabulous!

Please let us know how you liked our selections or add your own to in the comments.

  1. Orishas, yes. Arash, of course. Erisioni if I’m drunk on cheap white wine.

But t.A.T.u.??! As “world music”? Vaime! Russia’s answer to Milli Vanilli (spiced up with highly dubious “we were teenaged Lesbian lovers” backstory) were a succès de scandale in 2002, but for me epitomize everything that is wrong with music in the FSU. I agree 100% with this review: http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=10:wiftxqualdde .
Next time I’m in the States remind me and I’ll introduce you to some Russian music that doesn’t suck.

  2. Ha! You can’t convince me. I love t.A.T.u. Fake lesbians have a special place in my heart, I guess.
