Coincidence Log

Spirituality Personal GrowthWelcome to Laura and Emily's Coincidence Log. Here are our most recent real life coincidences.

09/14/07 - Both - We were waiting for our friend from Peace Corps to arrive from the airport. We wanted to take her to an Eritrean restaurant for dinner, but we weren't sure she'd go for it. When she got to our house, we asked her how she felt about the restaurant. It turned out that the airport shuttle driver who dropped her off was Eritrean and had been telling her all about the restaurant and that she should try it.

09/03/07 - Emily - After taking a new route for our daily walk, Laura had a strong feeling that we should take a different bus line than usual. I protested because it would drop us off far away from our house, but agreed to take the bus Laura wanted if it was coming around the corner right when we got to the stop. Of course, it was coming just then so we got on. A couple minutes later, a good friend I hadn't seen since high school got on the bus.

08/30/07 - Laura- My mom was pondering a problem that had come up in her life. She thought, "I wonder what Laura would think of this." At that moment I called her and provided the answer

08/26/07 - Emily - My friend was trying to convince me to go with her to Las Vegas. After leaving her house, I got on the train. A woman sat down next to me and started reading a Las Vegas guidebook.

08/16/07 - Both - Laura was thinking about a friend and wrote her an email to ask how she was. A letter from the same friend arrived later.

08/13/07 - Laura - Yesterday I talked to my mom for a long time about my stepdad, Herb. Then I relayed the story to Emily on our way to the store. On the bus ride home, the man sitting next to me was holding a paper that said "Directions to Herb's".

08/13/07 - Emily - I got an email from a friend out of the blue requesting romantic encounter although he is 3000 miles away. Not five minutes later I received a call from a local number I did not recognize. The caller had the wrong number and when I told him this, he too requested a romantic encounter.

08/08/07 - Both - After we both read The Unbearable Lightness of Being, set in Communist Prague, we watched the movie Bobby. One of the characters in the movie was a Czech journalist who kept talking about socialism in Czechoslovakia and Dubcek, just like the book.

08/06/07 - Laura - I was talking to my mom about how schizophrenics use language. Then we got on the bus and sat next to a (very likely) schizophrenic guy who was rambling loudly about how Bostonians said the word "church". My mom grew up in a highly religious family in Boston.

07/09/07 - Laura - Emily asked me how my friend Jill was. I said I didn't know and started thinking about her. Just then I received an email from Jill letting me know how she was.

07/08/07 - Both - The bus was taking forever, so we decided to hitchhike to dinner. Our friend flagged down the first car he tried and we climbed in. There was some hip hop playing and our friend asked the driver if it was Atmosphere. The driver said no, but that he really liked Atmosphere and were we interested in coincidences at all? Then Emily felt compelled out of nowhere to blurt out, "We speak Georgian!" The driver said, "No way." It turned out that he was on his was to a party for his Georgian friend Kote. He had never met any other Georgians or anyone that spoke Georgian before. We wrote congratulatory messages on Kote's card in Georgian.

07/03/07 - Emily - Shopping for dishes at Goodwill. I was telling Laura how in college I bought a set of dishes at Goodwill that I really liked. We found the very same dishes on the shelf. We bought them!

06/25/07 - Both - We had been meaning to buy some pillar candles. We found two practically new pillar candles out on the street. We also ran into a kid that initiated one of our greatest coincidences, the Georgian bus coincidence, 6/14.

06/14/07 - Both - Waiting for the bus. Emily had a flash of insight (which she described as a "breeze" at the time) that we would meet a Georgian on the bus. Laura was skeptical, but supportive of this possibility. On the bus, speaking in Georgian, we had a big discussion about innappropriate topics and then about the lyrics to a certain Russian song. As we were discussing the lyrics, a kid behind us said, "Hey, do you speak Russian?" Emily replied (in Russian), "No, do you speak Georgian?" The kid looked confused, but a voice from behind us said, "I do." There was a Georgian girl sitting behind us!
